Discussion and Business & Financial Analysis of National Aluminium Company Ltd:
National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) is one of India’s leading integrated aluminium producers and a Navratna public-sector enterprise under the Ministry of Mines. The company has a strong presence across the aluminium value chain, including bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting and captive power generation. Its integrated business model provides an important competitive advantage by reducing dependence on external raw-material and power supplies.
Current Business Position
NALCO delivered a record performance in FY 2025-26, reflecting strong operational efficiency and favourable aluminium and alumina realisations. Revenue from operations increased to ₹17,843 crore from ₹16,788 crore in FY 2024-25, while net profit rose around 9% to a record ₹5,816 crore. EBITDA also increased 9% to ₹8,613 crore.
Operationally, the company achieved several all-time highs. Bauxite excavation reached 77.01 lakh tonnes, alumina hydrate production 23 lakh tonnes, calcined alumina production 22.75 lakh tonnes and aluminium cast-metal production 4.72 lakh tonnes. Aluminium metal sales reached 4.74 lakh tonnes, while captive coal production increased substantially to 40 lakh tonnes.
The company’s integrated operations, captive mines and power generation provide cost advantages, particularly during periods of elevated energy and raw-material prices. NALCO is also increasing its focus on value-added products and operational efficiency.
Future Business Prospects
NALCO’s medium- and long-term growth prospects appear positive. A major growth driver is the expansion of its alumina refinery through the addition of a fifth stream, which is expected to increase capacity by 1 million tonnes per annum. The company is also progressing with the Pottangi Bauxite Mine, which has planned capacity of 3.5 million tonnes annually and is expected to strengthen its long-term bauxite security.
Another important project is the planned 0.5 million-tonne brownfield expansion of the aluminium smelter, along with a 1,080 MW captive power project at Angul. NALCO and NLC India signed a joint-venture agreement for the power plant in July 2026. These projects should enhance aluminium production capacity and support future volume growth.
Demand for aluminium is expected to remain structurally strong because of its growing use in infrastructure, automobiles, renewable energy, power transmission, packaging and electric vehicles. However, NALCO remains exposed to fluctuations in global aluminium prices, alumina prices, energy costs and foreign-exchange movements.
Overall, NALCO enters the coming years with strong profitability, an integrated resource base, healthy cash generation and significant capacity-expansion opportunities. Successful execution of its mining, refinery, smelter and power projects could provide a solid foundation for sustained growth, although commodity-price volatility remains an important risk factor.
