Discussion & Analysis of Business & Financial performance with future business prospects of Zomato Ltd:

Zomato Limited, a leading player in India’s food delivery and quick commerce sectors, has demonstrated significant growth and strategic diversification in recent years.

Current Business Performance

In the fiscal year 2023-24 (FY24), Zomato’s consolidated revenue from operations surged by 71% year-on-year to ₹12,114 crore, up from ₹7,079 crore in the previous fiscal year. This impressive growth was driven by robust performances across its key business segments:

  1. Food Delivery: Revenue increased by 40% year-on-year to ₹6,361 crore, accounting for 53% of the consolidated revenue. The platform served approximately 63 million unique customers across over 800 cities in India, partnering with an average of 250,000 active food delivery restaurants and 400,000 delivery partners.
  2. Quick Commerce (Blinkit): This segment more than doubled its revenue year-on-year, primarily due to increased throughput from existing stores and geographical expansion. FY24 marked the first full year of Blinkit’s financial consolidation, following its acquisition in August 2022.
  3. Going-Out: Combining dining-out services in India and the UAE with the nascent ticketing business, Zomato Live, this segment saw a 51% revenue growth year-on-year, largely driven by the dining-out business in India.
  4. B2B Supplies (Hyperpure): This business, supplying quality food ingredients and other products to restaurants and B2B buyers, experienced a 111% revenue growth year-on-year, reflecting the growth in the core restaurant business and new quick commerce opportunities.

Notably, Zomato achieved profitability at multiple levels for the first time in FY24. The consolidated Adjusted EBITDA improved to ₹372 crore from a loss of ₹783 crore in FY23, and the company reported a consolidated Profit After Tax (PAT) of ₹351 crore, a significant turnaround from the ₹971 crore loss in the previous fiscal year.

Future Business Prospects

Zomato’s future prospects appear promising, underpinned by strategic initiatives and favorable industry trends:

  • Market Expansion: The Indian food delivery market is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 12%, reaching $12.7 billion by 2025. Similarly, the quick commerce sector is expected to expand tenfold, from $0.4 billion in 2022 to $5 billion by 2025. Zomato’s strong market position and diversified offerings position it well to capitalize on these growth opportunities.
  • Going-Out Business: Launched in November 2024, Zomato’s ‘District’ app aims to consolidate India’s fragmented going-out market by integrating services like dining-out, event ticketing, and entertainment discovery. Early indicators are positive, with over 6.5 million downloads within weeks of launch.
  • B2B Supplies: The Hyperpure segment continues to support restaurants by providing essential goods and services, strengthening Zomato’s relationship with restaurant partners and reinforcing its position as a key enabler in the food industry.

However, challenges persist. Zomato faces increasing competition in both food delivery and quick commerce sectors, with rivals like Swiggy expanding their services and new entrants joining the market. Additionally, regulatory scrutiny over practices such as deep discounting and potential antitrust issues could impact operations.

The company’s ability to navigate these challenges while maintaining profitability will be crucial for sustaining its growth trajectory.

In summary, Zomato’s robust financial performance, strategic diversification, and favorable market dynamics suggest a positive outlook for the company’s future business prospects.
