Discussion & Analysis of Business & Financial performance with future business prospects of Hindustan Unilever Ltd:

Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), a leading player in India’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, has demonstrated resilience amid challenging market conditions. In the third quarter of the fiscal year 2025, HUL reported a net profit of ₹3,001 crore, marking a 19% year-on-year increase. This surge was significantly influenced by a one-time gain of ₹509 crore from the divestment of its ‘Pureit’ water purifier business. Excluding this exceptional item, profit before exceptional items remained flat. Revenue for the quarter rose modestly by 2% year-on-year to ₹15,195 crore.

Despite these financial gains, HUL faced challenges with underlying volume growth remaining flat during the quarter. While absolute volumes grew competitively, they were offset by a negative mix.

The company also contended with rising costs of key commodities such as palm oil and tea, which exerted pressure on profit margins. Additionally, a slowdown in urban demand, which constitutes a significant portion of HUL’s revenue, posed challenges.

In response to evolving market dynamics, HUL has undertaken strategic initiatives to strengthen its portfolio and operational focus. Notably, the company announced the acquisition of a 90.5% stake in the skincare brand ‘Minimalist’ for ₹2,955 crore. This move aims to capitalize on the growing demand for premium skincare products among Indian consumers.

Furthermore, HUL’s board approved the demerger of its ice cream division, which includes popular brands like Cornetto and Kwality Wall’s, into a separate listed entity. This strategic decision is intended to streamline operations and allow focused growth in core categories.

Looking ahead, HUL remains cautiously optimistic about its growth prospects. The company anticipates a gradual recovery in market demand, supported by increased government spending, favorable monsoon conditions, and improved rural consumption driven by state-led welfare schemes. However, challenges persist, including inflationary pressures and heightened competition from smaller brands, particularly in rural markets. To navigate these complexities, HUL is focusing on innovation, strategic acquisitions, and portfolio optimization to meet evolving consumer preferences and sustain its leadership position in the Indian FMCG sector.
